About the project
A small HF radio and a great group build.
The Pebble build is designed to be approachable and collaborative. A total of 20 kits will be available, and each kit will be the 20-meter-band model. We will work through assembly, inspect each stage, solve problems together, and help builders leave with a radio ready for final testing and on-air use.

Digital & Data Operating
Working Digital Modes
The Pebble 20-meter transceiver can operate digital modes such as FT8, FT4, and JS8Call when connected to external digital hardware.
Digital Setup & Equipment Requirements
To operate digital modes, builders must provide their own digital station hardware and cables. Required equipment includes:
- Soundcard Audio Interface: A modem/interface such as a DigiRig, Signalink, or audio transformer setup.
- Interface Cabling: Audio input/output and PTT triggering cables wired for the Pebble radio.
- Computer / Device: A laptop or Raspberry Pi with software installed (e.g., WSJT-X, JS8Call, Fldigi).
- Station Accessories: Appropriate power supply, USB cables, and connectors for your digital rig.
Note: All digital operating equipment, soundcard interfaces, cabling, and computers must be supplied by the builder.
On-Air Challenge
Pac Beach Build Competition
Test your newly assembled Pebble transceiver on the air right after the build session! Participate in friendly on-air challenges designed for all builders.
First POTA Activation Award
Awarded to the first person to successfully activate a Parks on the Air (POTA) park using their Pebble radio on any operating mode.
Max Miles Per Watt
Compete for the greatest distance contact (QRP Miles per Watt) achieved on the 20-meter band during the event operating window.
Challenge Guidelines
- All contacts must be made with the self-built Pebble radio
- Submit log entries (callsign, band, RST, grid square) to Heath for verification
- Prizes and certificates awarded at the closing ceremony

What to bring
Builders are encouraged to bring their own soldering irons and basic build tools, though a few spare irons and soldering stations will be available on site for people to use.
Pebble HF Radio Kit
The kit cost is $50. Payment can be made directly to Heath (NQ7T) at the event via Venmo, PayPal, or Cash.
